Water in iPod, doesn't power on

My son got water in his ipod touch. Dont think he got all the water out, (it was not submerged, but dripped water in the end) . It worked for a while, but later he charged the unit, and it got hot. Has not worked since.

Any ideas?

Keep the unit off. When a device gets water in it it is not the water that actually damages the device it is the dissolved solids and metals in the water that cause shorts in the circuitry.

Unfortunately the dock connector is connected to the logic board unlike the iPhone where it is a separate assembly.

You could try using a toothbrush to clean the pins inside the dock connector. Then use rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean it more throughly. Repeat this twice then try to charge it again.

If this does not work this means the logic board has become damaged and needs to be replaced.

-I would suggest selling it on eBay with an exact description of the issue.

-Or you could replace the logic board yourself which will be costly.

Good Luck!

I have another question. You stated " Unfortunately the dock connector is connected to the logic board unlike the iPhone where it is a separate assembly."

So if my iphone gets wet in the same manner, is there a likely hood it may be saved?

One thing to speed up the drying process is to put the device in a bowl of rice. This has worked for me on an iPhone 3GS and iPod 2G. Power the device off and leave it in the rice for at least a week.

Just Burry it in a bag of rice for a week and it should remove all the water out from the iPod!

David.

Does this rice really work? What does the rice do to the Iphone?

Not sure if David will see this question, so I will try and answer it if it is okay with you. Rice absorbs water up to its saturation point, usually more then twice its volume. It is almost hydrophillic, so it absorbs the water like a sponge, So by placing your iPhone or iPod in Rice the water gets absorbed into the Rice. The best way is of course to open the device and letting the rice do its work. If it is lots of water, the Rice needs to be changed since it will get saturated quicker. Will it do magic by itself? No. The best way of dealing with water (liquids) damage on your device is with this guide. Electronics Water Damage Hope this explains it for you.

Rice trick works.

I read an article about saving units exposed to water. You can search it to give you more ideas about it. These are the things that I remembered from it. I know someone who used this for a nokia phone that was accidentally dropped in water.

If it was immersed in salt water, you need to wash it using water w/ no salt in it. After washing, dry it and remove all removable parts. Put it in a storage where there is uncooked rice. Make sure your unit is immersed in it and leave it for at least 24 hours. You can leave it for 2 days if you want to. After doing this, turn on your unit and hope it turns on.

Lizette, I would most certainly not recommend to wash it with water after having been immersed. Check this guide for the proper cleaning of ANY device.Electronics Water Damage

well, I had my Razr immersed in beer on Grand Final day last year (or was it 2 years ago)- it did not work when I woke up, nor did it work 3 months later or 6 months later.

It works now - 13 to 14 months later.

What I want to say is (and I read evidence about that elsewhere) it can take a LONG time to get the inetrnals to dry.

The fact that it did get hot etc - you may have no luck!

Time will tell, and if you sell it, I recommend - be honest - you have live with yourself! YMMV as are your values

Man, you don't discriminate when it comes to alcohol. I'm afraid to ask what kind of beer it was.
