iPod Classic 6th not shown in System Profiler. What to do?

Hi everybody,

I’ve got problems with an iPod Classic 160 GB, 6th gen. („thick“). The HD was faulty, so I decided to replace it with a new hard drive. The old one was a Samsung drive, the new one is a Toshiba drive.

The symptoms are:

  • None of my Macs can establish a connection to the iPod with any of my USB-cables (all of them working fine with iPad/iPhone/other iPods). The iPod is not recognized by System Profiler (and iTunes, logically)
  • Putting the iPod into Diagnostic Mode there is no entry to test reading/writing of the internal iPod-HD - only HDSpecs and HDSMARTData are listed - HDScan and HDRW are missing

What I tried:

  • resetting the iPod several times (switching „Hold“ on and off, holding „Menu“ and „Select“ for about 8 sec. and so on)
  • leaving battery disconnected for several hours
  • testing with old faulty drive: same symptoms.

The iPod keeps starting from the old drive - slow and noisy - but it starts. Nevertheless, no synching is possible, no connection can be established (System Profiler)

HDSpecs and HDSMARTData show values which seem to be OK with the new drive built in. But turning on the iPod the normal way (not Diagnostic Mode) the iPod shows „Do not disconnect“ for a few seconds followed by „OK to disconnect“. I think this is because of the unformatted new drive.

May there be another way to reset the iPod more efficiently, probably? Where should I continue troubleshooting? Is there a low-priced possibility to check if a repair or an exchange of additional parts would be worth it?

Please tell me your experiences/suggestions.

Best regards

Olaf

Try a new HDD cable. It is possible that the Toshiba and the Samsung use different cables.

Thank you for your response, oldturkey03. Do you think using a different cable would make any difference? Remember: The symptoms for both Samsung (old) and Toshiba (new) are the same: Not showing in System Profiler, not be able to sync, missing entries in Diganostic Mode. Otherwise I would try to reformat the Samsung (old) - but I simply can't.

I guess, the HDD cable ist still OK, for the iPod is still able to boot from the old drive. But something with the dock connector itself or with the interface iPod main board / dock connector might be broken ...

But it also might be possible that the HDD cable is broken and won't work either with one or the other drive in the correct manner. Should I give it a try and order a new cable here? Should I look for additional spare parts as well? What do you think?

For the few $$ that the HDD cable cost, I would definitely try that first. I've had a cable iPods with similar issues and a new cable resolved that. The missing entries in diagnostics mode also show that your iPod can't read the drive. If you purchase an inexpensive Zif-to-USB connector (around $5 on ebay) you could test your drive separate from your iPod and could format it with your computers OS.

I ordered a new hdd cable and some tools at iFixit's. And in the Apple discussions I found several posts about people missing these two entries in iPod's Diagnostic Mode IO -> HardDrive. Looking in other forums someone mentioned, with upgrading the iPod's firmware, these options were removed for one should use Disk Utility to test the iPod's drive. Can anyone confirm? Another poster at Apple's discussions has problems finding his iPod at System Profiler as well. Otherwise, his Windows-PC shows it. On his Mac he is on Mavericks - so am I. Can this be a point? Perhaps nothing is wrong with my iPod: Its firmware might be the reason for the missing options in Diagnostic Mode and Mavericks might be the reason for not being able to use it on my Macs ...?

Do you have any access to another computer? Tried a Windows machine yet?
