Won't Power Up or blank with full fans.

Hi all.

I have a 2011 i7 iMac, 4GB ram 1TB HD and 6970m.

A few months back ( yeah this has been a while heh ) I was working on it, and went for dinner, came back and it was dead. Since it would not power up at all I have checked the following.

. The lead was working ( checked with Dell Ultrasharp display)

. All usb devices removed bar Apple keyboard

. Gave it 12hours unplugged to reset

So far the ONLY life from it is when I remove the power cord, while holding down the power button. I then while still holding down the power button reinsert the power cord, this then boots the iMac to a state of blank screen, no chime, no HD sound but all the fans are on maximum.

I have no applecare on this machine, and after detailed conversations it is highly unlikely to be in regard to a recall on the machine.

Whats my options really?

Full fans indicate a harfware failure - possibly a heat sensor. Hanging at the screen indicates a possible HD problem - these may be related.

Try to boot from some other source, optical disk, thumb drive, other Mac or Netboot -if that proceeds noraally but for the fans your HD is pooched and you have a hardware problem.

If booting from an alternate source works from that source run AHT - that may tell you more exactly what your hardware issue is.

I can only achieve full fans when I hold down power, and insert the power lead, removing the lead and re-inserting without doing this the iMac remains dormante with ZERO activity of any kind ( chime drive noise...)

Could I boot into the drive remotely using another computer?

Your issue is much more severe than first described (or understood). The machine must run almost normally (headless e.g. no display would be the only hardware malfunction allowed) so you can't access the HD from another machine. However, you can remove the HD to access files - put it in an external case.

I see, I hope to have someone more skilled than myself come look at it internally, I've not got steady enough hands to manage working inside the iMac.

You don't need Apple care to get an estimate from Apple, or an Apple Authorized Service center (if there's no Apple Store near you) - all you need is $. We're here to help those who can help themselves… but… not every job can be a DIY project. You might also contact a local computer/electronics repair shop. Good Luck.
