File fragmentation!

Overtime your disk becomes frag'ed. I would recommend getting a good defragmentation app i.e. Disk Genius or get a second HD to copy off the files then reformat the drive and put the files back.

Would you recommend doing a low level format?

A standard Disk Utility format is all you should need here if you copy off the files and then re-copy them back on.

The Mac OS (and every modern OS) has had automatic defragmentation built in since 10.2, so I wouldn't guess that's the issue. Lots of software utilities disregard this fact and will defragment your drive anyway, although I'm not sure there's any reason to.

I would go into Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk Permissions. Also, how full is the drive?

We often defrag drives with Windows, Unix & Max OS-X systems. While its true the newer OS are better in not frag'ing because the way the they write to disk a single given file (virgin). DB's or edited files frag and the OS just can't deal with it. These files by their nature are expanding or contracting in used blocks creating voids across the disk which then are used. This is more often when the disk is better than 2/3'rd's used.

We're talking about a simple volume connected to a Mac, not a production Oracle database. The fragmentation controversy aside, I still think he's far better off taking the step of repairing permissions first. And a drive that is full will get slower, so that possibility shouldn't be ignored either.

While repairing permissions can't hurt, I would recommend doing a disk repair in this case if the drive has issues. That's not a bad thing to start things off with.
