How to unlock if the 3g iPhone is locked

i have my iPhone 3G. when i instelled new virson. my iPhone is locked. so what i have to do to make unlock?

If its locked as in it asks for a passcode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore:Apple Support

I imagine you are wanting it to be carrier unlocked. Unfortunately, if you just updated, you probably killed your unlocking capability too. If you have an iPhone 3G that was made before September of 08, you might be able to downgrade your bootloader and thus initiate an unlock. But before we get into those details, let's make sure that's what you're looking for. :)
