The case is anodized to look like gold it's not really gold. Here's an example of what people have done AnoStyle - Colors and AnoStyle - Gold
The metal its self from my understanding is made from an alloy called Liquidmetal.

(the aluminium alloy is soft. the battery door for iphone 5 is easy out of shape. so gold-plating is a good way.)
