Is this a display data cable problem?

Hi there!

I have a problem with my MBP 2,2 GHz Quad-core with the AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphic card (early 2011). It is upgraded to OS X Lion (v. 10.7.5)

The problem is that the computer display stays black after startup. When i connect an external display the computer works like normal even though the screen on the computer is still black.

It happened a couple of times before, but a restart or two would make the problem go away. This time though the problem persists and I haven't been able to get the screen back on.

I have tried to reset SMC, reset NVRAM/PRAM, booting in safe mode and reinstalling OS X, but none of it worked.

I have tried running the extended mac hardware test, but this found nothing to be wrong.

I can't see an image when i shine a flashlight into the screen.

Under the hardware tab in the "System report" I can't seem to find the display and when i try the "Detect display" under systempreferences only the external display monitor is detected.

Also normally when I push down the display, the computer goes into sleep mode. Now nothing happens when i close down the lid and the computer just keeps on going like normal.

I haven't been able to find someone with the exact same symptoms on the internet.

As of what I can find on the internet of people having somewhat similar symptoms I am thinking it might be a display data cable problem, but since I have never opened up a laptop I would like to be sure before I open up my computer, if it is maybe still just a software problem.

Any help on what could be wrong and how to fix it is much appreciated! :)

Sometimes when i put down the lid, the computer does go into sleep mode, but it comes in periods of it working.

Another thing is that the camera is working just fine.

Any help is still much appreciated!

Have you opened your system to make any inspection of the display cable & logic board connector?

Have you gotten your system wet by chance?

I would start off running Using Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to see what it shows. Does it come up with an error?

Thanks for your reply. I tried opening the computer and by what i could see of the part of the display data cable showing, the cable was fine. I did not try to look into the logic board connector though.

I can safely say that the system hasn't been wet.

As I wrote, I have been running the AHT in the extended mode and it found no errors.

Dan - Would an IR sensor failure cause this?

I was thinking the latch was not set on the LDVS cable (I guess thats not it). The fact AHT is not seeing a failure condition means it has to be beyond what it can see. That would be the LCD unit or the LDVS cable. As he can press on the lid to get a reaction and the display control panel doesn't show it. I'm thinking the LCD it's self (or the LDVS cable connection on the LCD). It's a odd condition to say the least).

Bredholt - Well you have a few people here scratching their heads here ;-}

Some of your information offers conflicting diagnosis here. Working from the easiest to the hardest things to check out:

* IR sensor block also has a magnet activated reed switch so when the lid is closed the system goes into sleep mode. Here's a good view of the sensor block which is underneath the HD and the connection is part of the HD cable. When your internal display is working (open) can you pass a magnet across the surface just above the sensor does it go into sleep mode? On the other side in the lid is the magnet. See if someone replaced the display unit, do you see any marks around the bezel? If you do then it's possible the magnet was not correctly aligned in the holder. Here's the guide to replace it if it is the issue Replacing MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Early 2011 Hard Drive/IR Sensor Cable

* The next thing to check is the LDVS cable (display cable) is correctly seated in the connector on logic board. If you find its OK, then you'll need to pop the display off to get behind it to check that side. At that point it would make sense replacing it and see if that solved the problem. If not the issue is the display it self. Follow this guide: Replacing MacBook Pro 15" Unibody Early 2011 Display The only problem it doesn't get beyond pulling it off. I think i have been confusing the sleep mode not working, because i have had the external monitor connected to the computer and while this is connected the computer of course does not go into sleep mode if i close down the lid on the laptop. I tried disconnecting the hard drive cable and booting the computer from the system install cd, but this did not resolve the problem. * I checked to see if the LDVS cable was correctly seated into the connector on the logic board. It seemed to be perfectly seated into the connector. My next step is to replace the LDVS cable.

The hard drive /IR sensor cable failure is a pet peeve of mine on these models and one of the cheapest, easiest fixes. Try this, disconnect this cable from the logic board and start up from the DVD and your original system installation disk and see if the problem persists. I tried disconnecting the hard drive/IR cable and starting the computer with the install cd inside while pressing "c", but the screen still remained black.

Almost sounds like the magnet that detects the screen opening and closing is not detecting that the screen is open.

Troubleshooting that could be tricky, I've read that removing the external screen when it's running can kick the inbuilt screen into life....

I had that thought too. But he stated the system hasn't been opened and the only way the magnet can shift is if it wasn't placed in the slot correctly reassembling the display (letting it shift). The contact switch is part of the IR cable (which Mayer was thinking). I haven't seen a failure of it cause the display panel not show the display though. Which implies the display not the IR cable.

I think if it's the switch or sensor, the screen will flicker some sign of life when the machine is initially powered on...
