iPhone isn't detecting new battery?

I recently replaced the screen on my iPhone with the help of ifixit. Everything went well except that I severed the cable on the battery. I quickly ordered a replacement battery and when I put it in the iPhone wouldn't power on or even show the indicator that it needs to be charged. I plugged the iPhone into a charger and the Apple logo appeared and the phone booted up normally. The lock screen said it was 100% charged so I figured everything was working. When I unplugged the charger the phone died instantly and will only boot when connected to a charger. It won't connect to a network or Wi-Fi just as if it had no battery plugged in at all. Is this a problem with the new battery?

No. I have solved the problem however. I took the battery out of a working iPhone and put it in and everything worked! I can breathe a sigh of relief! It's just a faulty battery.

The best case scenario would be that you got a defective battery, return it and get another. If the second battery gives you the same result you may be looking at somethings else.

You say you severed the battery ribbon, how? If your had slipped by accident and impacted the board in any way you could be looking at motherboard damage. If that is the case, get yourself a magnifying glass and look for any missing resistors on parts of the board that are exposed.

I didn't damage the motherboard that I'm aware of. I was pulling the battery out and the cable ripped off where it enters the battery.

You must have pulled pretty had to get the cable to rip, were the screws that hold the battery connector down still in when you pulled on it?
