iPad does not turn on with non-OEM LCD.

I run a repair shop fixing phones and iPads, and I ran into an interesting problem today that I've never seen before, after swapping out a scratched LCD for a new "generic" LCD that I had shipped overnight.

All the specs seemed to match, and the connectors connected fine, but when I clicked everything back together, it failed to turn on. I disconnected and reconnected all the cables, I tried to do a soft-reset, and more. After plugging it into a computer, it would not even mount or charge.

I tried swapping out every piece that looked like anything might be wrong, even trying out the original LCD in the device to no avail. I finally tried, as a last resort, a junk LCD I had in my closet that I had "trashed" as being not quite good enough to use on a customer device. Put it all together, and it started right up as soon as I plugged it in.

Apparently the original LCD and the replacement "generic" LCD were both preventing the device from booting or mounting after the repair, but my trashed OEM LCD allowed it to boot up just fine.

I can find no reason why this should have been the case, can anyone else come up with a reason that could have caused this?

I repair a lot of iPads and I have never seen, nor can I logically explain, why the iPad wouldn't charge or mount even if the LCD is bad. I can't imagine the LCD can corrupt the logic board into not charging or mounting.

Even in the case of bad LCDs, I could still pull it up on the computer and charge it. It sounds like you did your due diligence in what you tried so I can only think that trying a different LCD (one that you feel comfortable giving to the customer) would be possible to get it to work.

Have you tried swapping out the LCD cable on that ugly LCD (which works) with the newer LCD? I still cant see that being the issue but it would be worth a try before you shell out for another LCD.

The LCD I ordered did not include a new cable, so I reused the original LCD cable the entire time. Think it's time to invest in a few to keep in stock, just in case.

The LCD that eventually worked only had a minor fault in the upper left hand corner, and the customer was happy to sacrifice that minor aesthetic for not having to pay for a new LCD. So the day was saved in the end, it's just an unanswered question I hope to never be faced with again.

A year later, almost to the day, I've run into the same issue, on an iPad Air. The device will boot and mount without the LCD connected, but as soon as that connector clicks into the board, it's a brick. The weirdest part is that this time, it even worked during initial testing. It only ceased powering on after it was confirmed to work, and powered off to conserve battery.

I've still yet to discover a solution to this issue, shy of replacing the LCD, and I'm hoping that once we have one on hand to swap to, it will sort this issue out again. Will update further next week.

Any chance you guys have run into anything like this in the last year? I'm still pulling a complete blank on this perplexing issue.
