Battery percentage not changing after Rear Housing swap, restarting

Hello!!

Just a background on myself, i work professionally at a repair shop and have multiple years experience on many many devices.

I recently swapped the Rear housing on my iPhone 5 running ios 7 beta 3. I decided to swap to a custom Blue and gold theme and while tedious it was well worth it! The only problem i had was there was one Slotted screw(the one nearest the bottom of the logic board that the battery shield sits on top of)where the screws hole was slightly off, so i had to leave it out until i could reach a better screwdriver. When i turned on the phone everything seemed perfect!!!! But then after about 2-3 minutes a slightly grey tint shot down my LCD and the phone restarted itself. This seemed slightly different than the usual beta restart because of the tint but i figured it was just a bug. The other thing i noticed is that my battery meter/percent doesn't change it's reading until the phone is restarted(whether on it's own or by a person). Everything else on the phone works excellently.

I DID go back in and put in the slotted screw that i had left out and this did NOT fix the problem. Still restarting(but much much less often) and battery percent not changing. i Googled and didn't find anything so i came here!

Does anyone have an idea on what might be causing this?

I know that it could possibly be the battery itself, but the phone is less than 4 days old so i would doubt that. A friend told me to make sure that i transferred over the grounding clip on the charging port to the new phone. I did not replace the charging port and was unaware that there was a ground on the port.

Many have said that it is ios 7 beta, but i was running beta 3 on my previous iphone 5 and never experienced this.

Ideas? Thank you!

UPDATE - The phone also is not recognized by the computer until it is restarted!!!!

I don't know why your phone is doing that but I will share with you that my iphone 5 has recently started doing the same exact thing with the battery percentage not changing without a restart. Also my phone will periodically restart itself. I have had my phone around 6 months now and am running ios 6.1.4. I have not replaced the back housing or done anything to the phone. It is stock.

Hi

I run a company that fixes and customize all kinds of smartphone and pads. Iphone 5 is the most difficult because of lots of difficult errors like bad screens, bad sound, bad home button, idiotic powerbutton design and black screen problems. What I learned is thats VERY important to disconnect the battery before doing anything in the phone (including screen replacement)

I have the exact same problem with the battery meter after replacing the back housing with a see-through plastic casing. I tried to replace the battery but no luck. I replaced it back to a original casing, and the problem is still there.

I will now try to replace it again in a custom pink housing and will check this grounding clip (cant remember I have seen it)

I just replaced my battery in my phone and it was working fine for a week. I plugged it in overnight to wake up and see that it was still only at 26% from when I plugged it in, but it had the charging icon. I did a reset and the battery went down to 4%. When the USB was plugged into my iMac it would turn off and on while "charging". When plugged into the wall charger it just wouldn't charge at all. I've been trying to drain the battery by streaming video until it fully dies and it's only at 4% and it won't die. So basically I have the same problem...

Hi guys. I also have the same problem. I changed the back housing and it was working fine for a while. After I updated to Ios 7 it started with this problem. I noticed that it restarts if the battery consumption is high (for exemple if you use the flashlight + video recording). I was thinking to change the battery but apparently it will not help.

Another thing that I noticed is that after Ios 7 update it started to not be that smoth anymore (maybe that is normal because the CPU is less powerful).

If I find any solution I will let you know.

Cheers!

I have the same problem. Just bought my Iphone 5 used. It has the battery percentage stuck. It only changes when i restart the phone. It also randomly reboots when charging.

Tried most of the thing mentioned on the internett. (guides found on google) changing battery etc. Nothing has worked for me.

Did you ever fixed this problem?

I actually fixed it. I did take a alcohol bath, put the logic board in a bowl of alcohol 99%. Isopropanol. Then afterward i tested it with a original un waterdamaged battery. And suddently it worked. So i bought a new battery from ebay and now the phone works 100% again.

But the weird thing is. When the phone was water damaged the original battery was inside. The first thing i did, was buy a new battery and attached it. But i still had the problem.

So after i took a alcohol bath and put another new battery in it, it did work.

I dont know how or why.

Just make sure u have the connectors for the lcd correctly seeded as you can click 1 side down and think that's it.. Or you have damaged the screen when reinstalling a new 1 should sort it..

I had the same issue on my iPhone 4s. I tried to change the battery as well but came out with no good. My battery percentage was working fine in ios 6, but started showing issue in ios7, at the day of ios7 launch I was able to figure out this issue so I reverted back to ios6 (as apple was signing ios 6 at that time) and it worked again. Now after ios 7.1 I have upgraded my phone and now I am stucked at ios 7 with no working battery percentage.

Can you please help, also will alcohol bath help me in this process, if so can you put some light on it.

I have the same problem as well, swapped frames and new lcd after a frame bend. I wonder if there is something in the iphone 5 frame that more easily damages the logic board? Lots of people with this problem who haven't dismantled frame/lcd. haven't tried the ETOH bath. probably will give it a try not much to loose now.

I think is the Flex Ribbon (Power button cable, audio cable) or Battery.

thanks diego, I will try swapping the power cable, and audio cable, battery has been changed twice with no improvement. The audio cable maybe the real problem. seams to chew up power get hot and shut down when video is playing or recording or on calls. It is certainly worth a try and a lot cheaper than a logic board.

I'm going to guess that this one is similar to a common problem on the iPad mini---damage to the batt_swi line which takes out the gas gauge function of the battery. The battery will still charge, but the charge percentage is wrong. The device doesn't "know" when it gets below 1% and will try to continue to boot and run = restart, no power, restart---faster and faster as the battery has less and less juice.

If you charge it up, the problem will go away for awhile.

Solution--find the damage (usually a tiny tiny component knocked off near battery connector) and repair.

hey with a closer look at the mother board i saw a resistor knocked off near the 1st battery pin from the buttom . all other resistors seem fine

It is a damaged resistor solder joint, or broken off capacitor near the battery. Also called Finger nailing when you repeatedly discount the battery connector, or use something that may scratch a resistor off. This causes an over amp malfunction, as soon as it draws too much battery it will turn off. For a capacitor going out, it is the same as well, people with capacitors off may experience phones restarting every couple minutes because there is no energy being stored to keep the iPhone recycling its own power. I read over 50-60 posts on this subject, and the proven fix has always been the same. it is circuit board related.

hi, would fixing this fix the problem?

thanks

hi,

so what will fix the situation?

さんによる

@thanh. Thank you. This was/is exactly my problem. To answer comments about how to fix - in this case, you don't; replace your motherboard or just get a new phone,

To summarize:

Symptoms: After replacing battery in 5c, it reboots every 2-3 minutes; sometimes stays on but battery % does not update except if restarted. Nothing changes this behavior (old battery, airplane mode, restore, checking connections, etc)

(My) Cause: Motherboard damage during battery connector removal.

At the base of the iPhone 5C battery connector there are a series of tiny tiny components. When removing the battery if you let the tip of your tool hit the motherboard you can easily wipe off one or more of these off.

I was able to get a macro picture with my digital camera, then zoom way in and see the damage,

Lesson: When prying up the battery connector, touch ONLY the lip of the black ribbon cable/battery connector. Do not let your tool get close to the motherboard.

Thanks.

I know I'm late, but I found a solution to the problem, and the symptoms showed just as a bad solder connector. On my replacement battery there was no little "sponge thingy". So I started thinking that could be the issue, and covered the metal bracket in electrical tape before screwing it back on. Lo and behold, no more reboots when charging and my battery % actually moves.
