WiFi Greyed out iOS 6.1.3

To start, I bought this phone from my company. (We fix most phones and computers.) The whole phone worked up until 7/6/13 when I couldn't see any WiFi connections around me. Normally I see at least 6. I powered my phone off, turned it back on and now my WiFi won't turn on at all. I can still see my WiFi Address, I've tried back up and restarting and wiping and all that jazz. Nothing out of it. I did try the freezer trick for about 15 minutes and it worked for about 2 hours.

I haven't had the chance to open the phone to look, I've been away on vacation, but from what people say it sounds like faulty soldering on the WiFi chip near the head phone jack. Can anyone tell me how to check if it's the solder? I have no experience with soldering so I wouldn't know where to start. I heard about the heat gun trick. Should I try it?

I say take it to apple and get it checked out before opening your iphone your self and possibly risking messing something up if you have had no experience

This is a hardware-related issue. There are a number of ways to fix it. The most common steps are as follows:

1. Turn on Airplane Mode on your iPhone

2. Go to General > Reset > Reset Network Settings

3. Restart the iPhone

There are also some additional exotic ways to deal with the issue described here:

Hope this helps.

I've seen this issue quite a bit.

It's definitely not software related, but hardware related.

What you need to do is:

1) remove the back glass and unplug the battery and remove it.

2) Remove the Emi shield that covers the LCD connector

3) inspect the board and you will see a black big chip (the wifi IC). Looking straight down with the charging pins closer to you, it'll be on the right next to the LCD connector.

4) THE FIX - you need a hot air type of tool. I'm not sure if a hair dryer will do the trick, but I use a heat gun. You need to apply slight amount of heat. NOT a lot. Just enough to get it hot but not too hot (too hot = you can't touch) like I said, slight heat.

5) put the phone back together and voila. Works!

I've seen roughly 3 phones already same issue same fix. No warranties so far.

Thanks, just did a reflow as suggested by YoloRepair, wifi now working. Kudos

さんによる

YoloRepair, I have this same problem. You say not to use too much heat, but yet this fix requires a reflow? That's a bit contradicting. To reflow you'd have to get it pretty hot to reflow the solder (over 360 deg). I am slightly confused. I have a hot air station so I can precisely control the temperature and speed of the air.

This worked for me!

I can confirm that YoloRepair's fix does work. I did it on my phone today that had the greyed out Wifi issue. I want to add and clarify a few things that might help the next person:

Watch this video before doing anything: http://youtu.be/ZHH-zbNgJx0 You don't need to follow all the steps, just the ones on how to open the phone, disconnect the battery, and remove the EMI Shield. That's all you need to do to disassemble. You will need a pentalobe screwdriver to open the phone and a spudger definitely helps with prying and whatnot. You can buy them both of course on iFixit.

I disassembled and using a hot air station, put hot air on the wifi chip and heated the surface to almost 400 deg F. I used a heat sensor to read the temperature as I was heating it up. It only took maybe 5 seconds. I would strongly recommend this method over a heat gun as the air temp is easier to control and put down on the chip. You don't want to heat anywhere else, and you don't want to overheat and potentially blow the chip or other components off the board. That is it; i reassembled and wifi turned on and has stayed on and has stayed connected thus far.

That will only temporarily fix this issue. The only way to permanently fix it is to do the repair as described above by YoloRepair, which has been confirmed to work, and stay working, by multiple people.

Hi Todd,

what type of I heat sensor do yo uused to read the temperature while using the hot air station?

do a hard reset, just hold the "Sleep/Wake" button on the upper right of your iPad along with the circular "Home" button on the lower middle part of the device's bezel. After 10 seconds, you should see the Apple logo. That's the sign that you've successfully pulled off a hard reset with your iPad.

Actually this worked for me for 2 and a half day only, i have posted this above too early i guess... IPhone sucks and i hope they realize it, im seriously considering moving to other android shortly as can not play this game every other week - freezer, hair drier, reset... What is next? Microwave? Too silly

さんによる

After all freezer, hard reset and no wifi on iphone for almost 3 weeks i recently took hairdryer and blowed to the back side by camera for couple f minutes till it says on the screen "overheated... Bla bla bla" i switched off, left to cool down and in 20-30 mints turned on, it worked and workes fine for 2 weeks now. But frankly i moved to Samsung Galaxy already a week before that experiment, it is totally wrong that users should go through all that cap. So next time it is greyed out i will place it to microwave for few minutes and let you know on results. Good luck to all, unfortunately Apply sucks now days, very disappointed ...

I did the freezer thing and it worked for me. I left mine in the freezer for about 15 mins (have the phone turned off) then after the 15 mins I turned it back on and did a reset network settings straight away. I did this a day and a half ago and I still have my wifi.

Freezer thing is temp fix. i tried it .. first it worked for a day. then it lasts only for 15-30 min... so then i took it to service shop. they opened it and then heated the wifi module with blower. he said this is very common and the fix works as permanent. if incase even this fails, need to to replace the wifi module chip which costs $60. for the the hot blower thing works.. its been and day and its steady.

It has been 10 days and I still have my wifi and its still going strong. All I can say is that each iphone is different and the freezer thing was the solution for mine.

Good luck with the blower thing hopefully you wont need to replace the chip.

Let mine go dead and wifi came back on. Only lasted one day. Now toggle switch works but no network is being detected. Would Apple replace my phone, still on warranty.

It'll require a reflow. Check the answer by YoloRepair ca

Same symptoms for me. Tried resetting, tried restoring still greyed out. Tried the freezer thing too - it worked, but unfortunately only for about 2 hours. Clearly there is a hardware problem.

Update

I had a strange solution to this. After trying resetting and the freezer (which worked for a couple of hours), all of a sudden my wifi is working again, about 3 weeks after it stopped. I was convinced it was a hardware problem but clearly it was not. I can't put my finger on the solution, but what I did immediately before wifi started working again was delete the Flixster app and reload it and reset my network settings (which I had done multiple times before). Wifi has been working for almost a week now.

TKS Nata!!!

I had already tried freezing procedure but it not worked for me. Now I did the same procedure described by Nata, heating iPhone with a hairdryer. No need to open the device! After the Overheat message, I turned it off, and waited about 20 minutes. I turned it on, and...voila...Wifi is back and working.

I don't know if it is a permanent fix, I'll report later.

I also had tried a contact to Apple Support, in Brazil, and they asked me if I expected the iPhone to last forever, since it was bought almost 2 years ago!!!! Incredible... :O

After calling Apple support and going through all the usual software checks they eventually concluded it was a hardware problem and it would cost £140 to repair. I had read on a few forums that it might be the WiFi chip's soldered connections so I used a standard hairdryer and heated the phone for about 10 mins. At this point the phone displayed a message saying "phone too hot for use, allow to cool down". (I thought at this point I'd wrecked the phone!). After the phone had cooled, I tried connecting to the WiFi and to my surprise, it worked and has been working fine now for 2 days! My phone is out of warranty so I had nothing to lose and if it limps through the next 6 months I can get a free upgrade. No technician is going to endorse this method but it worked for me and saved me £140! I'm not recommending this as a fix, but just that it seems to have worked for me.

had the greyed-out wifi problem on my 4s, accidently left my phone on my dashboard of my car for a good 4hrs in direct sunlight.. came back to a hot car and a very warm iphone! big yellow warning triangle told me to power off and to allow it to cool down. when i started the phone back up i checked my wifi connections and it was allowing me to slide it on/off!

i kept the wifi perm on because i didnt want it to fk up but after a whole week it decided it wasnt going to work anymore. back to square one >=/

(this was during ios6, have yet to try it with ios7)

A wifi button just greyed out and never came back. A few days ago i had a trip, and in one place there was no radio coverage for about 20 minutes. After that I have noticed that my wifi is working again. Its already 4-5 days, and i don't have any more issues with a wifi, plus my battery is working much better now (I could say twice better).

How to fix WiFi grayed out in iPhone

Maybe this will help someone.

What I assume is that your main frame needs replacement as when in crowded fm zone the frame does not perform as it should scrambling with to many frequencies but I assure you as son as your location restores to normal usage of waves the frame will block out weeks signal and fm radio cordless phone microwaves interfere so change the metal frame for about 15$ online and your prob will be solved

Yolo's solution works every time on the 4S when using Todd's recommendation on temperature and equipment i.e hot air station. I would only add that all of the area of the logic board surrounding the Wifi chip should be protected with a heat resistant material during the process. Full marks to both guys for their valuable contribution.

I tried heating the chip with a hot air gun.

I shielded everythin but the chip.

Now, when I charge the phone the chip gets super hot and the phone won't charge.

Should I just buy the wifi chip board, or is something else wrong?

The hair dryer process worked for me. I tried the freezer procedure with no luck. I tried the airplane mode shutdown and reboot and no luck. Also tried resetting my network settings to no avail. I was afraid to try the hair dryer but my phone is fine and it worked. For me, I had to get the message about the overheated phone before the fix took.

Here's what I did and it worked, I first went to Settings>General>Cellular> and turned off cellular data as well as made sure "enable 3g" was set to off (aka disabled). Then I proceeded to go down to the Reset tab (this is in the general section of settings) and pressed "Reset Network Settings". I waited for my iPhone to boot up and show the "slide to unlock screen" at which I did NOT slide to unlock, I did another reset manually (by holding down the home and power button until the silver apple logo showed). After letting my iphone boot up this 2nd time, my wifi was no longer greyed out and I was able to connect to my usual wifi network. I am unsure how much the order and exact steps I took matter in this situation, but I figured I would post exactly what worked for me.

I have an extra i4s (shattered screen) and am looking for real solutions, not bubble gum and hair dryers. I switched out the wifi antennas and no change (the phone that worked still worked and the phone that didn't, still didn't, regardless that I switched the two antennas). Is there other parts to swap out? Should I switch the mother boards? Is it feasible to switch motherboards? I don't want to mess with the screens because I know they is where many people go wrong, but I don't want to buy a new phone either. I'm not ready to use snake oils yet...
