PB G4 1.67MHz. No display, fans loud when PB turned on

I have a lovely PB G4. I really don't want to get rid of it. One day, whilst watching the Audi Channel (Audi) and it suddenly stuttered and died. Now there is no display and the fans blow out air like it's going to take off!

Since this has happened, I've tried a few times the reset the PRAM, etc, but only managed to see the screen come on about 3 or 4 times and then it goes off again for a while. Have to leave for weeks before it comes good, but only for a shirt time. Explain that one!!!

I have take it apart and taken brief looks to see if there was anything lose inside; couldn't see anything. Also the chime doesn't always sound when it's turned on. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't; when it doesn't the fans come on and the machine sounds like it wants to fly away like Iron Man!

Could it be the logic board? Screen inverter? Battery? All of the above? Any help on this one would be greatly appreciated.

It's still in good condition, and, of course, out of warranty.

Don't want to get rid; would be a shame. It has 2GB RAM (I've tested these and they are fine) and the hard drive has been upgraded to 250GB.

Thanks to one and all and look forward to hear from all you wonderful people.

Regards,

J

Hi! In addition to resetting the PRAM, I'd reset the PMU (with the machine off, hold the power button in for about 10 seconds, until you hear a tone and see the sleep light flash).

If I had to bet what the problem was, I'd guess it's a bad memory slot. Try removing one of the RAM modules, power on, and if that doesn't work, move the module to the other slot, and power on again. Aluminum PowerBooks are notorious for bad memory slots, and when there is memory in a bad slot, they don't power on, or they can sometimes act like yours. I'd also do all of this with the battery removed, just to rule it out.

Good luck!

I removed the logic board. There's no white crud underneath, and I failed to find burn or scorch marks anywhere else. I did find one leg of an 8-pin chip that looks suspect:

I also put WD-40 (in a No-Mess Pen) on the area that previously had white crud. I used a toothbrush with a rather gentle motion. I then used more of that 99% isopropyl alcochol to clean up the WD-40. I tried to put more solder on that bad leg, but I don't think I was successful. The PB chimed! There was a video image that washed the background into an off-white fuzz. You can see the difference as the left edge of the display functioned properly:

After loading the OS, the video "repaired" itself:

I would say try some WD-40 to clean that suspect area. Wheeee!

Hi, Before going to parts lets try a couple of other things. First reset your PMU and Pram and let us know if that helps and we will go from there. Ralph

Thanks..I had replaced the power module and it was working fine for a couple days.. then when i pressed power button i would hear the drives turn on but no display. I took out ram put it back in and also reset PMU (shift/ctrl/option/power).. it worked for a couple days, then same thing no display but could hear the drives ( but also tried external to my LCD TV with a DVI to HDMI adapter and the light came on the adapter when I turned it on but no display to TV. I took out the top stick of ram with a 1GB in bottom..it came right on!!!!!!

I have the same problem on my 1.67 GHz PB 15".

Changing the RAM around didn't change its behavior. Even powering it up WITHOUT RAM failed to change its behavior. The most interesting behavior came when I tried to reset the PMU - the fans also activated with no image and no chime and no Caps Lock when pressed. I opened up the keyboard and found some interesting crud just below the right fan and to the left of the right speaker:

It looks consistent with liquid damage, but the area surrounding that crud looks spotless to me. I used 99% IPA and a q-tip to clean as much as I can. I will probably extract the logic board and examine it for more crud.

Stay tuned!

yes - 100% a "non technical fluid" damage. use a soft paintbrush instead of a q-tip - the parts are tiny and the q-tip cant reach everything that needs to be cleaned
