Possible broken SATA cable, what should I do?

I had been having a problem with my internal hard drive not being recognised, internally but working externally and so after doing a lot of searching it seemed like it may have been my SATA cable. So I bought a new cable and my original hard drive will work internally, however my upgraded hard drive won't. This is quite strange because both work externally but only one works internally.

Does any have any ideas as to why this might be?

Edit: I have also verified the disk while it is plugged in externally had no problems were found.

Thanks

Mike

Sounds like the HD's I/O is to fast for your system.

Look at the HD install sheet or the vendors web site to find the ATA-II/III setting for your drive to drop down from ATA-III to ATA-II, you'll need a jumper to set it.

Thanks for the reply,

I probably should have mentioned that prior to the cable failure I had been using the drive internally and it was working fine.

Also the dive is SATA II already which my computer can handle, I was going to try and dorp it down to SATA I speeds however it seems that there aren't any jumpers on my drive, according to the WD website there are only jumpers on the 3.5 inch drives.

Thanks

Mike

Edit: may have been wrong about the jumpers, however you cannot put it into 1.5Gbps mode with the jumpers

mmm ... Maybe the new cable is bad.

That's what i initially thought but it wouldn't explain why my old hard drive works internally. I am stumped

OK - Then you'll need to check the drive for corruption. Using your old drive internally as the boot drive and the newer drive externally run Disk Utility and repair the disk (make sure you have things backed up first) If you have nothing important on the disk then reformat the drive and run disk test.

I haven't reformatted the whole disk but I have verified the disk using disk utility and there weren't any problems. If the drive works externally in a caddy, would reformatting be likely to change anything?
