HD upgrade: can I take the one in my MBP 2010?

Hi,

I have a problem I don't know how to deal with.

I have an OS X.8 in my mbp 2010, on a 1tb scorpio HD, with which I am very happy, but I have a newer mbp in which I would like to put the 1tb HD.

Can I just take it from the old mbp, put it in the new mbp, and everything works fine ?

, or do I have to time-machine it, then format it, install it in the new mbp (and then how with starting up the new mbp on a empty HD and no OS X.8 DVD ?)

What is the simpliest way to do this ? I am a bit confused, many thanks for help..

A new 1tb HD is ordered, even if it will be temporary as I am waiting for the new crucial m500 with 960 gb...

But is it better to use the migration assistant with firewire (but how, because I will insert a blank HD, and no dvd to install OS X.8) or with time machine on a USB 3 HD ?

Will work-don't know about "fine" your old HD is SATA II (3GB/s) the new laptop can handle SATA III (twice as fast) so you're handicapping your new laptop if you transfer your old drive.

Machead is correct about the transfer rate.

I'd use the new hard drive in the new machine and just use Migration Assistant to transfer my data. Just hook it up in Target mode with a firewire cable. Here's how to do it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661

Well aslong as the hdd which is the bottleneck in the setup,- And The drive isn't faster than 100 mb/s it doesnt matter if you can put 3 gb/s or 6 GB/s through the channel!, the old drive will work fine. All sata are compatible a hdd drive with 6 gb or 3 gb chanel throughput doesnt matter when Hdd drie only reads and writes 100 mb /s.
