Hi, I have a white 16GB, iPhone 4 that will not type the letters Z and will only allow the back button to work until you turn it on to its side (landscape mode). I just put on a new screen and am wondering if that is the problem or if anyone has had this problem before and what the fix was for is.

jsknox11, sounds like your digitizer has failed. It is my experience, that whenever a certain area of the screen is unresponsive to touch, that it requires a new digitizer. Try to return your screen to the vendor in exchange for a new one. Hope this helps, good luck.

Do you have any idea why everything would work when placed in the landscape mode though?
The spot that is not functioning does not change when you turn your phone. Mark that dot with a dot of permanent marker, than turn the phone until it goes into landscape. Touch the spot, somehow I bet it is either not having any character there to be pressed or it will not work:-) This is a very common fault....
Well everyone it was the screen. I replaced it and worked great! Thank you to everyone that had a suggestion.

My assumption on this is that you have a dead spot in your digitizer. To comferm this you should go to your home screen and try dragging an app all around your screen and if it goes back to its normal position when dragged over where "z" would be located its probably a dead spot. And I believe the only way to fix it would be to replace your screen.
