Searching No Signal then turns off and on repeatedly. How to fix?

I bought this phone on ebay as faulty and locked to Vodophone. The fault described on the auction was that after replacing the screen it was working fine but then began to power off after an hour or so. All the buttons seem to work fine although the display is not quite as bright as my other fully functioning 3GS. I have had it officially unlocked for free by Vodaphone and I am now using a new Giffgaff sim on the O2 network in the UK. At first I tried a new Vodophone Sim. the problem was the same with both sims.

The phone boots up as normal and usually has a decent mobile and wifi signal to start with. If the phone is left alone after turning on it seems that the signal will stay for hours. If used, however, it will at some point turn off and then go into a constant reboot cycle sometimes getting stuck on the Apple logo for ages. A hard reset holding the power and home buttons for 8 or so seconds will kick it out of the loop, but if you turn it back on after 10/20/30 seconds or so or even after a few minutes it will go straight back into the loop or boot up with no signal and then go back into the reboot loop.

I have found that if I can get it to reboot to no signal and perform a 'power off' slide immediately and then leave it for an hour or more then it will boot up with a signal again and stay on with a signal as long as it is not used.

Restores in iTunes work but don't seem to make any difference. I have tried a dfu mode restore too but that doesn't make any difference either.

The problem isn't caused by apps because it had none on there originally when I set it up as a new phone. I have tried several times to get apps downloaded but it would turn off halfway through the down load. I did manage to get a couple of apps installed (Facebook and Ebay) last night and the problem is the same.

It has turned off after sending a text message and today I made a 5 minute call without any problem except that immediately after the call ended it showed 'No Signal' again so I turned it off with a 'power off' slide and when I turned it bac on 10 minutes later the signal was back (mobile and wifi) and is still on after 30 minutes where it has been left on my desk.

The battery seems fine. It charges normally and seems to hold charge ok. I have opened the phone after a 'power off' slide, removed the screen up and lifted the logic board to check the battery which is firmly stuck down and not moving. The logic board doesn't appear to have been removed before because the 'do not remove' sticker was still in place and undamaged. I replaced the logic board and tightened the screws properly making sure all the connectors were in place. No damage visible to the naked eye. Still exactly the same problem.

I am at a loss as to what to do next. Anyone have any ideas?

Just wondering if heat could have anything to do with it. The phone doesn't get hot, but my house is cold and the surfaces I leave it on are generally cold. It goes to 'Searching' then 'No Signal' when it is being used and held which I guess warms it up slightly just from being held. Then if I power off before it gets into the reboot loop/cycle and leave it on my desk (cold surface in a cold room) it usually finds the signal when I turn it on 10 minutes or so later and if I leave it on the desk (or any other cold surface/room) it will stay 'locked' to the signal. It seems to be only if the phone is used (in which case it is being held) that the signal goes.

I have tried putting it into airplane mode and turning 3g off/on but this makes no difference.

Update: The phone was charged overnight has been on with a signal most of the day while I was out and about in town. Several texts were sent and a phone call taken and music listened to on a 20 minute bus journey. It then lost signal after sending a text and turned itself off getting stuck on the Apple logo. I did a hard reset and left alone for 20 minutes or so in my coat pocket. I then powered back on and it had a signal again for a minute or two but then lost it. I powered off and left it for another 10 minutes before turning it on. I was still out and about in town and it found a signal and I was able to check facebook for a few minutes before it lost signal again. I know the signal in this area is good. I turned it off again and left it for another ten minutes and turned it back on and it had a signal again. It is now 6.00pm in the evening and the battery indicator is showing 76% so it doesn't appear to be draining too fast.

Any suggestions as to a possible cause and fix would be appreciated.

Maybe it has a bad battery in it. I recently replaced a battery in an iPhone 4s CDMA and it worked fine and all but I found that the generic battery I bought on eBay when used in the phone made it turn off. I did alittle research on it and I found that some generic batteries cannot hold up to the power needs of the iPhone and when you try to draw too much power from the battery the phone will restart it self and the iPhone I have also goes into the off/on loop. Hopefully that helps you some.

battery change made no difference. removed the motherboard and put it in a working case with a good battery and got the same problem. Put it back in the original case and no change at first. Now it is telling me a restore in itunes is needed (connect to itunes logo on screen) but it wont restore. First it gave me a message that the phone could not be activated at this time and to try later, then on the next attempt it appeared to finish the restore but gave me a -1 error message. I was very careful with the board and it hasn't been dropped or damaged and to my knowledge it is intact and all the connectors are firmly seated/attached. Itunes detects the phone and says it is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. I have tried both ordinary and DFU restores but get the -1 error every time. Think i'll give up!

By the way, when the motherboard was in the new case i put it on a docking station to charge and it would stay on with a good mobile signal and good wifi signal while docked (over night and all the next day) but when I took it off the docking station it showed searching and no signal within about ten minutes. now it is saying it needs restore...

Update: Put the phone in the freezer for 20 minutes wrapped in plastic sandwich bags. It did a normal restore (not DFU) and after that had a good mobile and wifi signals for 10 minutes then it lost them and went back to turning on/off.

Odd thing is that while I was typing the previous comment I had the phone connected to the pc (to fully charge the battery it was on about 90%) with iTunes open and it was turning on/off as usual and not connecting to iTunes. However, it suddenly connected and iTunes was asking me if I wanted to set up as a new phone or from a back up. I checked the phone and it had booted up with a wifi signal and was on the 'Activation Required' screen. It backed itself up in iTunes (I did nothing) and then the wifi signal went and it turned itself off again. It now tries to turn back on but stays on the Apple logo for ages and eventually turns off and immediately back on again. Correction, as I type it has reached the Activation Required screen and is 'Searching''. I slid the slider and it too me to the 'Connected to iTunes' logo and after 30 seconds or so it turned off again.

Might this be something to do with the wifi (bluetooth?) chip not connecting properly? Could it need a reflow? Ideas welcome...
