What is this chirping/squeaking noise coming from my iMac?

I have an iMac which has started making a regular squeaking/chirping noise which seems to be coming from the bottom right hand corner of the machine (just above the usb ports and just below the optical drive). I notice that if it is making the noise when I put the computer to sleep, the sounds dies away - as if it is the fan or the hard drive as it stops spinning. Any ideas how serious this is and whether I should replace anything? I have installed software to monitor my hard drive and disk temps and fan speeds and all seems to be okay for now. Also a little afraid of trying to do the fixit work myself.

below the optical drive is a fan

lppk at this picture of the step by step guide: http://s1.guide-images.ifixit.com/igi/fR...

but since you are afraid to do it on your own, maybe you should look for a professional who does that more often and has the proper tools to do it

Thanks for the info.

If i just leave it for now, what is the worst that can happen? Is it likely that the fan is causing any internal damage or might it just stop working? Is it possible that the machine could overheat? How seriously and quickly should I respond to this?

well, i think taht right after the fan stopped working, the optical drive will die - it's really warm inside the iMac - thats why they build in those fans ;-)

it's cheaper to fix the fan issue right now instead of buying a new fan and a new superdrive (the superdrive costs around 80$)

maybe you shuold find someone who can do that for you.

i openend many of those devices, it's not that hard - but as i wrote above - if you are afraid doing it - give it a pro and he will did that job for you (pro does absolutely not mean someone in an apple store ;-) )

I have found that BAD memory will cause this issue. I have no idea why. Do this, pull the memory one at a time, then replace one at a time. If the funny noise goes away whenyou restart, replace the bad stick of RAM.
