Is it ok to check my battery voltage while it's plugged in?

I'm wanting to check to see it my battery is any good. I know that if there is no reading it could be possible be just a dead battery. So can I check it while it's plugged in? Thanks

Cody, yes it is okay. Problem is, that even so you may have voltage reading on your battery, you can still not determine if it holds a charge etc. Measure on the outermost ends since that is positive and negative. you should get anywhere between 2.8V and 3.7 V

So how can I check then to see if it's holding a charge. Because right now. I plug it in and it doesn't do anything. The port looks fine. All ribbons are intact. I used a screen that I know works and nothing. Doesn't sync. Nada.

when you plug it in, do you have power at the battery contacts?

I haven't hooked it up yet. I was just checking before I started. Is that the first step then? Checking for power at the contacts while plugged in?

That is definitely where I would start. Also, check your dock connector. male sure it is in food condition, without bend broken or corroded pins. If that does not work, your iPod will not charge, play sync etc.

What setting should my volt meter be at?

I don't know what the multimeter would have to be set to but as long as you don't short out the positive and negative terminals on the battery you should be fine.

You can test other electronics while there is current running. Heck, you can even test the current directly in the electrical socket itself, so just make sure you don't short something out.
