becky hoban, the hot and cold water inlet valves are located at the back of the washer. These valves receive a control signal from the Central Control Unit to manage the temperature of incoming water. The temperatures are determined by the specific wash cycle selected and a temperature sensor located in the wash tub. Since it only hums if you select the cold, I would check the little screen filter at the water inlet first. It is possible that it is clogged and does not allow cold water to enter. If that filter (screen)is okay, check the water inlet solenoids. you will need an ohmmeter for that. You can get the service manual for your washer [https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/eab852a13fbc842085256aa200643dd6/|from here] for an explanation of the testing procedure. The water valve assembly is available at places [http://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-Kenmore-Washer-Water-8181694/dp/B0041OMTVY|like this.] Hope this helps, good luck.
