Has the phone been dropped or gotten wet at all?
Try starting the phone in [https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-225270/|safe mode] and check if the speaker works OK.
If it does then a downloaded app may be the cause of the problem. A downloaded app is one that you downloaded and installed on the phone. The trick is to find out which one is the culprit.
