The critical update message you are getting should not be tied to the MDM. Usually when you get that message its tied to a firmware update that's needed to work with the OS you are attempting to install. In my experience the device enrollment is a separate issue. I professionally refurbish these machines and there are so many intricacies it will make your head spin. I cant offer you advice on Time Machine but I have always found a way to get an OS on a machine.
