With the laptop turned on etc, connect an external monitor (TV?) to the laptop's HDMI port and check if you get a display on it. Press the F7 key to toggle between the laptop screen only, the external display only or both on together.

***If there is a display showing on the external monitor,*** try shining a flashlight at an angle close to the screen and check if you can detect any images at all. They will be very faint if they are there, so trying this in a darkened room may help to see them.

''If you can see images,'' then there's a backlight problem with the laptop screen. This could be due to a faulty backlight power circuit on the motherboard, faulty video cable/cable connection between the board and the display or a faulty display.
''If you can't see any images'' this could be due to a faulty video cable/cable connection between the motherboard and the display or a faulty display.
***If there is no display showing on the external monitor*** are you sure that the laptop is turning on and starting? It may be that it is not passing POST (power on self test)
Try a full power refresh and check if that resolves the problem
* Turn off the laptop if it is on and disconnect the charger if it is connected.
* Open the laptop and disconnect the main battery from the motherboard.
* Disconnect the RTC coin cell battery from the motherboard
Here's the [link|https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/tp_e580_e585_hmm_en.pdf|hardware maintenance manual] for the laptop. Go to p.66 and p.73 to view the procedure to disconnect the main battery and the coin cell battery, respectively.
When the RTC coin cell battery is removed, measure its voltage. If it is <2.5V DC replace it. The part number is 04W1642. Search online using the ''part number only'' to find suppliers that suit you best.
* ''Press and hold the laptop's Power button for a full 30 seconds and then release it.''
* Reconnect and replace the RTC coin cell battery (or its replacement), reconnect the main battery, reassemble the laptop, connect the charger and check if the laptop turns on OK
If it turns on OK there may be a message about the date and time being incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset. Once the date and time have been adjusted, the message won't appear the next time the laptop is turned on. Also if any user definable settings in BIOS have been changed to suit whatever your operating requirement are, they will have to be changed back again.
