Changing all in one cable to just thunderbolt cable

So I am wanting to replace the all in one cable to just a thunderbolt cable. Dose anyone have any experience with this or have done this to there displays? I am waning to see if I can keep the plug to reinsert back into the back of the display so there isn’t a hole left in the back of it.
