As you say it may be a microphone problem with the microphone or perhapsit may be that the voice inlet hole. located on the bottom of the phone next to the charge port may beis blocked with lint etc.

Use a strong light and a magnifying glass to check if this is a possibility.
 
If it is blocked (or even if you can’t tell) try using a vacuum cleaner to see if this clears the obstruction (if any). DO NOT use a pin or probe to try and clear the hole as you may damage the microphone which is located directly behind it.
