Have you noticed any sort of brake fluid leaks down near the wheels? When you hit that pothole, you could have damaged a whole slew of components in the process, such as the brake line going to the wheel brake cylinder, the wheel brake cylinder itself, or the caliper/rotor/pads. I would check the front left wheel, as it sounds like you're continuously losing brake pressure when your brakes are applied, and pumping them once or twice rebuilds the brake pressure. Also check your brake fluid level to see if it's dropping off.
