The hard drive/IR cable gets damaged on this models as the cable climbs over the last step and onto the optical drive. To test. remove your hard drive and hook it up to a USB to SATA cable, plug it in the USB port closest to the Mag-Safe port and boot.

I use 3M extreme mounting tape on either side of the cable to prevent this from happening again.
