Thanks to both of you for your comments. Other than trying the rice treatment (which I now know is not ideal), I didn't try anything except take it to Apple Store who said there was one of the internal sensors showed water damage. At least all the parts are still original. I think there must be an intermittent connection for the home button/flex cable that lasted long enough for the phone to fully restore from Error 53, and even for the home button to work for several hours afterwards. Is it still a good idea to get it to a repair shop to get it inspected, ultrasonically cleaned even now 15 months later? Ideally I'd like a functioning home button, but don't really need Touch ID to be working.
