-I've got the exact same problem, I had exactly the sae problem with the plastic and I noticed that the only thinf working is the scrolling wheel. Mine stopped working exactly today and I've bought it the 30/11/2014. As we are exactly one year after the date I bought it, I think of a "programmed obsolescence". This is really curious.. Please update if you happen to solve the problem ;)

+I'm able to update settings using the Asus program.
