+personally I don't like updating OSX via the update module, it leaves redundant files and slows down your computer for future use.

+here is what I do:

+back up to HD to external drive:
Power on & hit and hold "option" key, wait until disks appear
insert bootable USB El Capitan,
-proceed with install
+go to disk utility and delete your hard drive completely
+
+then proceed with install
Diskmakerx is an easy way to create a bootable OSX ... google it.
