iPhone 3G: Why does my iPhone has some grey spots on the screen?

I have accidentally fallen on my iPhone and hit on the screen with my elbow. I have noticed some grey spots on my display now.

These grey spots (5 of them) are visible on the screen even when the phone is on standby mode. These grey spots are not always in the same shape too.

The screen is intact and the touch functionalities are fine too. The touch on the grey area is also getting recognised fine.

I had thought of changing the display but when am noticing that these spots are becoming smaller, now I dont know if its a good idea to change the display.

Can someone please tell me what should I do now regarding these grey spots?

iPhone 3G: Computer died, how can I salvage data and apps from iPhone?

This isn't a mechanical repair question, but I hope it's okay to post it here.

My MacBook Pro's hard drive died, and was replaced under AppleCare warranty. No, I did not have a current backup. Yes, I have learned my lesson, and have purchased an external drive for Time Machine backups. That helps me in the future - I need help salvaging the past while I lick my wounds.

I want to synch my iPhone to the like-new system but want to salvage everything I can first. I would like to just keep my phone as-is and push everything on it to my new laptop, but it's my impression the phone will essentially get wiped and start from scratch if I let it synch. Is that true?

Assuming that's the way it is, I've seen apps for pulling various sorts of data from an iPhone to a computer, but the choices are a little confusing, and there doesn't seem to be simple, one-step solution. I would appreciate your wisdom on the best steps and tools for achieving the following goals:

- All my photos and music were synched to the Iphone. All of the music was ripped or recorded live, none purchased through iTunes. The photos will be lo-rez but that's better than lost. How best to get my music and photos off the phone, into the iTunes/iPhoto, and resynched?

- I have several dozen downloaded iPhone apps, free or paid, all useful in their way. Will the synch preserve them, or will it wipe and start from scratch? Once I authorize iTunes on this machine, can I download the apps again since I paid for them once already? Do I have to hunt them down individually or is there a more efficient method?

- How can I preserve my contact list and calendar data?

- Hardly required, but any way to preserve application-specific data such as Banking accounts, game high scores, etc?

Thanks

iPhone 3G: Opened to repair, worked for a while, possibly static issue

Hello!

Well, I guess my iPhone has bit the dust. A few months back I installed a new battery I purchased from this site and had no issues whatsoever following the procedure.

A few weeks pass and I crack the glass screen.. not an easy replacement, but I finally got around to it a few days ago. The phone was working perfectly for a few days until I noticed the infrared sensors not dimming the phone when I held it to my ear. I wanted to investigate, so I opened the phone again to see if I could find the problem (Also possible the phone was on when I did this).. Lo and behold, when I put everything back together, not able to find the issue w/ the infrared sensors, and the phone completely doesn't work.

It will turn on for 5-10 seconds when plugged into a power source, show the apple start-up logo, emit this strange high-frequency buzzing noise, and then shut off.

It's the most frustrating thing.. I'm out of a phone!! Hopefully I don't have to fork out money on ANOTHER new battery so any help would gladly be appreciated!

Thanks

- Paul

I guess, in short, did I break something opening the phone while it was on? Specifically the battery?

iPhone 3G: water damage, now working, but dim display, need help with cleaning

I plan to try to clean my water damaged iPhone to see if that will help with the dim display, since everything else seems to be working. I realize this may not work, but figure it is worth a try. I have the tools ready and am already inside. I am not quite sure how the ribbons are supposed to unclip though. It seems there is a sticker on top of each, but can't really tell how to best approach unclipping them. Do they open, slide off, what? This may seem like a dumb question, but I don't want to do further damage by trying to force it the wrong way. Thanks in advance for any assistance!

iPhone 3G: Power button randomly presses itself

Hi guys,

Got a randomly rebooting iPhone 3G here that worked fine docked for some reason.

Replaced the battery using the guide found on this site.

Back together the phone worked fine but it kept locking itself and showing the power off slide bar. I have a feeling that the power button presses itself randomly or something.

What can I do to fix this except cleaning the buttons and hoping that that works? Going to try that later today.

Update

Ive cleaned the power button and the power button contacts. The button stil doesnt work. Im trying to take the phone apart again to see if it solves the problem.

Volume buttons work fine as does the vibration switch. Could it still be the flex that is broken or is it more likely the actual button isnt making contact with the flex.

iPhone 3G: How To Program iPhone 3G LCD/ LCD Datasheet

This question also appears on the "Discuss" board.

I like working with microcontrollers such as those in the Arduino platform. Now that I've replaced the entire display assembly of an iPhone 3G with a IF137-008-1, I'm left with a perfectly good LCD unit that the customer won't want. Is there a datasheet for the LCD and perhaps even a development type PCB that I can plug it into and play with?

For example can I set this up so an Arduino Mega can send a jpg photo to the LCD with some nice caption text?

iPhone 3G: Why is my iPhone working but the screen is black?

My iPhone was damaged over the weekend and the screen was shattered. I ordered a new screen and replaced it yesterday and everything was working fine except the earpiece and proximity sensor.

I took the phone apart today to fix it and my screen went black in the process. I have checked all of the connections, especially cable #3 and nothing looks out of place.

The phone is still working as I can receive calls, emails, etc. I removed the lcd from the glass and it does not look broken at all.

iPhone 3G: New Battery Charges Slowly, and Discharges Rapidly

I have a 3G, running on 3.1.3 and 05.12.01. It is jailbroken. The battery it had when I bought it (used) would not charge. So I replaced the battery, and the new one wouldn't charge. So I replaced the battery block/charging port with a new one, as I found under close inspection that the connector had been damaged, aparently during a previous repair. The phone now charges, but very slowly.

1. It takes around two days to fully charge a 10-20% battery.

2. If the phone is on, but locked, the battery drains very quickly - Within a few hours of sitting quietly on the shelf.

3. If the phone is turned completely off, it holds the charge just fine.

4. The phone does not seem to be getting hot.

So any ideas? Thanks.

I've fixed about a dozen iPhone's so far (I usually do it for friends, who have a broken screen or LCD or something). Today I replaced somebody's home button, cuz it was broken. It could be pressed (it popped in and out just fine) but nothing would happen.

iPhone 3G: Error 23 When restoring. Brick or no?

Hello everyone,

firstly id like to say this place is awesome and amazing, a few months ago i broke the glass on my 3G, i went all out and bought the LCD kit and it worked fantastic, but alas, there's always problems.

What happened:

A few nights ago me and the wife were leaving the house for dinner, i had my hoodie on, had the iPhone in the front left pocket (big mistake) as im leaning down to get into the car, it slides out ever so gracefully, hitting the car door and falling to the ground. I yell crap, and pick it up, press the hold button, comes on, no scratches nothing, it survived another fall. so i thought.

This morning, when i was waking up for work, firstly, i have a powerpad, so my iPhone has the powerpad case, i reach over and pick it up, 100% charge, i shove it in my pocket and head to work.

I pull it out to see how late i am for work, and nothing, it doesn't turn on, im pressing the hold button, the home button, every combo i can think of, its really making me mad. then it dawns on me, its probably dead (for what ever reason), i hook it up to my car charger, and the silver apple appears, i watch the road, few minutes later i look down, screen is off, so i assume it booted up. I press the home button, nothing. I press the hold button, it acts like its powering up again. Well, this goes on about 3 times. so i finally decide to watch it (im at work at this point of course) it comes on, then after a few minutes of where you think its going to fully power up, it looks like the lcd back light shuts off, and the screen slowly fades away, just like it had died.

Well, it only does this when its plugged in, when its not, nothing happens.

I was able to reboot it into recovery mode, the usual cord point to itunes, and itunes picked it up as recovery mode. I tried using firmware 3.1.2 as thats what i had, Error 23, i read somewhere that getting updated firmware might help. Error 23. Sigh.

Anything i can do at all? im using a crappy T-Mobile 239 slider crap. Going from iPhone to anything is like buying a Rolls Royce and driving a Toyota.

Is there any hope for her, or will i have to break out a shoe box say my good byes? so far from what ive seen, Error 23's are nothing but trouble.
