LaCie Minimus: I Won Auction: Cool Gadgets & Heaps of Tangled, Mismatched Cords

Since moving to Oregon I have longed for the helpful, competent fixer-folks that were in every other open-garage back home. Most have no interest in repair here, others overstate their skills and just brutishly destroy things. Mostly my things. That's not me. My father built and repaired everything and showed me how as he worked. So, I do fix things, however my confidence in electronic repair is timid. I feel I'm a capable, careful, manual reading, proper-tool using gal that respects the directions. I would have been content reading and learning from @oldturkey03's contributions all weekend. My point is, I don't know everything but I can repair things. Having said all that, the tangled nest of the cables here cannot be overstated. I may eventually tease out the matching power cords but I have other things to do and it's my birthday weekend!

Key Problem: I need to download 1.5 Tb of data from a paid data storaGe service to an external drive from the auction before I'm charged another year's subscription fee on Monday.

Question: Can one successfully cut the device plug from the main housing of a 12v power adapter and attach a device plug that seemingly fits? I have a new looking LACie Minimus with no writing at all other than "LACie". No amperage printed either but @oldturkey03 and I believe it to be 5v 2A. What say you? Can it be done without zapping the drive? I don't want to wait and be charged, I also don't want to destroy it if its just impossible. I need to know, given what I've shared, is it possible? And how,, I need that too, lol. Instruction and encouragement is always appreciated. Thank you!

I have an E6400 with Computrace active in BIOS - 1440x900 Quadro NVS P series Core 2 Duo, so the good one. Absolute confirmed the machine was left active on an old dead subscription and the prior owner dealt with it and confirmed it is ready to be deactivated but the hard drive was pulled. The drive is a WD10SPCX I pulled from a a janky IdeaPad. Will this drive work properly in the E6400 so I can get the agent removed from the machine under XP or Vista Ultimate?

(Yes really, an E6400 licensed for Ultimate and not Business or XP Pro)

WD 4TB My Passport Portable: My barely used WD 4 TB My Passport Ultra spins up up then down

Based on a suggestion in this forum I twisted my hard drive drive with some rotation in the air. This knocked it out of the 16 clicks then shutoff problem which I was having. Now I'm faced with the issue of the drive spinning up for a few seconds, followed by spinning down the next few subsequent seconds. All the while the white power light is on. I'm unsure what's happening. Any help is greatly appreciated. Also worth noting, it doesn't show on my pc when connected, neither mac nor windows, at any point

hard drive: Recommendations for where to shred a hard drive?

I have a small stack of dead hard drives I'd like to have shredded. I've found a few places online that provide that service, but the best quote I got was $10 a drive. I'm curious if anyone has any recommendation of anyone who provides the same service for a cheaper price.

(And I know I could just drill some holes in the drives, which is what I may end up doing, but I like the idea of total information destruction that shredding provides and I like the idea that they'll recycle the remains properly afterwards.)

Solid State Drive: SSD Suddenly Stopped Working.

So, upon restarting my laptop, my 2.5" TeamGroup 2TB SSD stopped showing up. It wasn't showing in the BIOS or Windows. Later it started showing up as an unknown device in Windows, and still not at all in the BIOS.

I popped it open to have a look, and the only think I saw that looked out of order were these semi transparent things. They look cracked.

What are these, and could they have caused the problem?

They look like fuses to me, and they are non conductive. There's absolutely no conductivity through them. Just OL with a multimeter.

WD blue Hard Drive: My HDD isn't spinning, making a sound, or lighting up when plugged in

So I noticed my storage and applications and files all gone after the New Years, apparently the blank folder since December 2025 was a tall tell sign that the drive stopped working after I switched to a lower voltage charger since my old original one broke. I since then bought a new SATA cable and new charger but still nothing. I also tested out a external HDD drive cable to check if it worked, but still nothing. I don't have enough money to get it fixed by a specialist so I'm wondering if I can fix it myself?

I have two 12tb WD external hard drives connected to my computer. When I shut the computer down or put it into sleep mode, only one drive powers down. The other keeps humming as if it's connected/as if the computer is powered on.

Full shutdown of the computer doesn't make it stop, nor does ejecting the disc.

The other drive doesn't have this problem. It shuts off when the computer is in sleep mode or shut down. The drives are the exact same make.

Nothing appears to be accessing the drive (nothing could be accessing it if the computer is shut down fully and disconnected from the internet, as far as I'm aware).

I have changed the USB port, and it doesn't seem to matter which port it's plugged into. The power remains on regardless. This includes extra ports, as I have a USB plug extender with an extra four USB plugs. I have swapped the main plug for this as well as not plugging the WD into it at all. I've tried just about every USB port on the computer at this point.

Looking this up online I have found some discussion about entering the BIOS and changing settings, but I don't understand why it would only effect only one WD, and not both, especially when the USB port it's plugged into doesn't seem to fix the problem. I also don't have power running into any other USB devices (art tablet, for example) when the computer is shut down, regardless of port.

Seagate Technology Hard Drive: Title: Accidentally plugged 25V Roborock H7 charger into 12V Seagate O

== ==

Device: Seagate One Touch (Hub version)

The Issue: I accidentally used the power adapter from my Roborock H7 Handheld Vacuum to power my Seagate One Touch external desktop drive.

The Specs Mismatch:

Seagate Requirement: 12V / 1.5A - 3A

Roborock H7 Charger Output: 25.6V / 1.4A

Result: I sent more than double the required voltage into the drive.

Current Status: The drive is currently unplugged. I am worried about the internal controller board or the drive motor being fried. I haven't tried plugging it into my computer yet because I’m afraid of a short circuit damaging my PC's USB ports.

My Questions for the Community:

Is there a high likelihood that the TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diode on the HDD's PCB sacrificed itself?

Should I attempt to "shuck" the drive (remove it from the Seagate enclosure) and try connecting the internal SATA drive directly to a PC or a different SATA-to-USB adapter?

If the PCB on the hard drive itself is burnt, is a DIY board swap possible, or does the BIOS chip need to be moved to a donor board?
