Software: I have no sound in Chrome.

The sound on my computer works. The sound on other browsers work as well. The only place the sound does not work is Chrome. This has happened once before but I was able to resolve it. This time, nothing seems to be working.

List of things I have already tried (in no particular order):

Restarting Chrome

Restarting computer

Resetting Chrome settings

Clearing cache and cookies

Re-installing Chrome

Going incognito

Disabling/removing extentions

Using the software removal tool

Troubleshooting

Using guest profile

The only thing that has been suggested to me that I have not yet tried is using Chrome Beta and Chrome Canary. I will eventually try them if nothing better can be suggested to me. I would prefer them to be a last resort though, as I do not want to risk any bugs.

As for which version of Windows and Chrome I have, it's Windows 10 and Chrome 60.0.3112.101

Mac OS X: Installation of High Sierra 10.13 on unsupported Macs

I am currently researching installing OS X 10.13 High Sierra on unsupported Macs.

I did the Sierra upgrade on a couple of MacPros 4,1 and it has worked excellently, after I did a firmware update patch to get it to read as a MacPro 5,1, so I am very optimistic on doing it again. At the time I did it last year, it appeared that it couldn't be done on the 2008 MacPro. But, after watching a couple of videos, right now it appears I will not have to do a firmware update.

I'm first going to try the install on a 2008 MacPro, then try it on either a 2008 and/or early 2009 MacBook Pro.

I posted this to see if anyone has done it yet, also because I know we will have question on it, and to see if anyone has attempted it yet and has any advice.

I did my first install of 10.13 last night on a 2012 13" MBP without issue as expected but really have not looks at it yet. I did open a new install of MS Office 2011 which had reports that it was not going to work but so far have seen no issues.

Here's a list of the supported machines:

Here's the official list:

MacBook (late 2009 and later)

iMac (late 2009 and later)

MacBook Air (2010 and later)

MacBook Pro (2010 and later)

Mac Mini (2010 and later)

Mac Pro (2010 and later)

Here's the patch tool by dosdude for High Sierra, Iused his former patch to do the Sierra upgrade. It also tells you how to install it. It is reported to work on theses unsupported machines:

Requirements:

- Early-2008 or newer Mac Pro, iMac, or MacBook Pro (MacPro 3,1 and 4,1, iMac 8,1 and 9,1, MacBook Pro 4,1, 5,1 5,2, 5,3, 5,4, and 5,5)

- Late-2008 or newer MacBook Air or Aluminum Unibody MacBook (MacBookAir 2,1, MacBook 5,1)

- Early-2009 or newer Mac Mini or white MacBook (Macmini 3,1, MacBook 5,2)

- Early-2008 or newer Xserve (Xserve 2,1, Xserve 3,1)

Machines that ARE NOT supported:

- 2006-2007 Mac Pros, iMacs, MacBook Pros, and Mac Minis (MacPro 1,1 and 2,1, iMac 4,1, 5,1, 5,2, 6,1 and 7,1, MacBook Pro 1,1, 2,1, and 3,1, Macmini 1,1 and 2,1)

-- The 2007 iMac 7,1 is compatible if the CPU is upgraded to a Penryn-based Core 2 Duo, such as a T9300.

- 2006-2008 MacBooks (MacBook 1,1, 2,1 3,1 and 4,1)

- 2008 MacBook Air (MacBookAir 1,1)

http://dosdude1.com/highsierra/

UPDATE 10/5/17

Here's how I initially got my Early 2009 Mac Pro to take 10.2 Sierra:

EFI and Firmware update from 4,1 to 5,1 for Sierra Upgrade Solved

I have had no issues with this installation for the last year. I just booted this same machine from a High Sierra install on an external drive and it is what I'm using at this moment with no apparent issues. Warning I went to install it on an internal SSD and it says it wants to do a firmware update. Since I already did a hack firmware update, I'm afraid to do this yet until I know more about it.

Software: OS Lion is available for download

Lion became available this morning. At 9:05 it took 20 minutes. Download time is running an hour and forty five minutes. No telling how long it will take once email notifications are sent out. Just wanted to notify ya'll.

The incapacity of Lion to allow the functioning of the Power PC applications may be a major problem, the problem is the abandonment of Rosetta. Rosetta allows Power PC apps to run with an Intel processor. Before doing this update, it would be wise to check which applications, which small utilities will not function any more and to benefit from it to do the housekeeping or to find an equivalent with the Intel code of it.

CultOfMac offers a simple solution to track all this software. Make the following command in the terminal:

system_profiler SPApplicationsDataType >~/Desktop/MyFileTypes.txt

It will create on your desk a textual file " MyFileTypes.txt" that will contain all the list of the applications of your computer. Open and do a search for the occurrence " Kind: PowerPC".

All the software that have this label will not function on Lion.

For those who still imperatively need a Power PC application and who want nevertheless to upgrade to Lion, I suggest that they keep a partition Snow Leopard on their machine.

I ran this Terminal command and the list of programs that won't work on my machine was very extensive. Even my Adobe CS 2 won't work. I'll be installing this system on something that doesn't matter. This appears worse than my transition from system 9 and the loss of all those programs collected for so many years. I'm very disappointed with this revelation of Lion.

UPDATE

Lion is not a upgrade only. It will install a full version. I tried burning it onto a DVD but got media errors twice. I moved it to an external firewire drive to move it around. I didn't think it installed at first, it gives you an app that tells you what programs won't run with it. It requires a couple of restarts to install. The install took 22 minutes. It automatically opens migration assistant on the first boot.

To my surprise, migration assistant moved over all the apps that it says won't work so I will have to go in and clean them all out.

Mac OS X: macOS on unsupported Macs - legal or not? OpenCore

Hi guys,

I have question if is legal to have macOS on unsupported Macs. As I have Mac Pro 3.1 what have latest macOS (actually OS X) El Capitan. This machine is still powerful to run macOS Monterey (with OpenCore Legacy Patcher - upgrade to 32GB RAM with RX 560 and SSD). I even have it and running nice and smooth. Also can run apps what are no longer supported under El Capitan - specially Adobe Photoshop and Premiere.

But my question is - it is legal from Apple side ? Thanks a lot for any advice/ideas.

Mac OS X: Cloning 250 GB hard drive to 512 SSD with bootcamp partition

Hi,

First of all, sorry for my English but I'm not native!

Background: I just reached the capacity limit of my 250 GB HD intially bought with my MPB 15" (late 2008). The current HD is partitioned with 210GB for the Mac OS X Lion, and 40GB for Bootcamp with Windows 7.

My plan is to change the HD with a Crucial M4 512GB SDD and eventually allocate 450GB to OS X Lion, and 112GB to Bootcamp.

Of note, I do have a time machine back-up but I guess it only concern the files under OS X Lion.

I will need your view on the following:

1- In order not to reinstall everything, the quickiest way would be to clone the HD on the SDD, i.e. follow method #2 (from step 19).

a) How 250GB of data will be cloned on a 512GB volume space?

b) Is there as step during the cloning where we can decide to change the partition volume?

c) in summary, can I use cloning to reach my goal?

2- If the cloning does not allow me to reach my goal, I guess I will have to do a Fresh re-installation following your method #1?

3 - Finally, could you please confirm that I can replace the HD with the SDD using the following instruction guide.

Thanks a lot for your help and guides !

Cheers,

Emmanuel

Software: Problems with Safari & Software Update in OSX 10.5.8

MacPro G5 dual 2.0

I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. I updated my FireFox to 3.6.4 last night and it recommended installing the new Adobe ( I think Flash). Safari windows will not open, Software Update fails to function or even open. I had heard something about Adobe and Apple having a tussel. This is unacceptable. Has Adobe put the screws to me? Anyone else run into this problem?

It was install_flash_player_osx_ub(2).dmg Just downloaded Safari 5.0 and will try installing again. Re-install failed.

It probably is Adobe http://blogs.computerworld.com/adobe_fla... The question now is how to fix it. I download and ran Flash uninstaller and the problem persists.

UPDATE - I used the amnesia to remove flash, firefox and safari. I then reinstalled the Safari. It opens but no window and can't log into Apples software update. I would use migration assistant to restore the older versions but they're on an intel MBP and I don't know if that would work. Any suggestions would be welcomed at this point. I used migration assistant to move the Library from an old system on a second HD and it restored my ability to use Safari again. Software update still does nothing.

Hey @captainsnowball do you know if there is a version of Windows 10 that will run on a single core processor?

Well I’ve installed windows 10 Pro 32bit on it now and it runs fine, faster than I thought it would run on a single core. I got all my softwares installed. One thing it can’t run at all is 3D graphics and Videos, is runs google earth for a couple minutes and then crash’s and video plays behind the audio. I was surprised how fast it boot though, 27 Seconds!

JC V1S: questions about using the JC V1SE Programmer

just unpacked my JC V1SE - very excited.

will spend some time figuring out how to use it properly, but have some initial questions. hoping some of the seasoned pro's can help me out.

1) the unit can be run off of a iphone 6s battery. i tried 7 different older batteries but i couldn't keep the battery connector in the socket. once connected, as soon as i released pressure it popped out. is the battery the only way to power it, or can i the USB-C port at the bottom of the unit to supply power? I did connect the included USB-A to USB-C cable between the laptop and the programmer and it did power up.

2) if the USB-C port can be used to power the programmer for operational use, is the laptop the only method (because of the lower amperage)? can i use a 1A (iphone) or 2.1A (ipad) wall-wart/AC charger? or is that pushing too much juice through it?

3) i see in forums and videos that there are windows drivers and windows software that can be used in conjunction with the programmer. is this required? or can the V1SE be used as a stand-alone tool to do component reprogramming?

4) dumb question, but going to ask so i don't have to assume.... the USB A port on the top is to plug in an iphone via the phone's lightning port. the USB C port on the bottom is strictly for providing power to the unit and is not for any sort of data exchange. is this all correct?

5) regarding reprogramming battery SN, can OEM apple batteries have their SN re-written? or is only 3rd party batteries that can have their data changed? and once a component has has its SN reprogrammed, can it ever be reprogrammed again?

6) i've read that it's only JC type home buttons that can be reprogrammed. i've only worked with two different ones, v3 and v8.1. will one or the other or both work with the reprogramming? has anyone had any experience or success with reprogramming the YF type or even Apple OEM buttons?

thanks for your time and info.

JC V1S: What is the JC v1s programmer useful for?

Can anyone give me a rundown of what they’re using the JC V1S iPhone programmer for? I understand it will restore True Tone. It seems it won’t fix Touch ID or Face ID, though it claims to. What exactly are people using it for?
